Toyota Rust Proofing… Because You Live at the Beach!
The Sunshine Coast beach lifestyle is second to none, but while the sunshine and salty breezes are great for us, they can also cause vehicles to rust – that’s why Toyota Rust Proofing is essential.
When it comes to rust, it is far better (and cheaper) to be proactive. Preventing a build-up of rust on your vehicle will help you avoid costly maintenance and protect your vehicle’s resale value.
Causes of rust in vehicles
Rust most often occurs on the parts of the car that are washed less frequently, like the underside of the vehicle. Chipped or damaged paint can also let salt and moisture in, causing metal corrosion.
Chemicals, moisture and dirt can all lead to rust formation. However, salt exposure -from road salt or salt spray from the ocean - can accelerate the rate of metal corrosion significantly.
Added to this, high levels of sunshine can expand the pores in vehicle paint, making the surface more susceptible to rust formation.
Does living near the sea cause vehicles to rust more quickly?
Living near the ocean, particularly in a hot, sunny climate such as the Sunshine Coast, can make your vehicle significantly more prone to rust damage than vehicle owners in inland regions may experience.
And while driving on our beautiful local beaches is a favourite pastime in the region, it is important to prepare your vehicle beforehand by applying a Toyota Rust Proofing treatment.
After your visit to the beach, give your vehicle a thorough wash, remembering the underbody – this area is heavily exposed to sea water and sand while beach driving and is often overlooked!
Rust and vehicle resale value
Prospective purchasers are likely to examine your vehicle thoroughly before offering to purchase it. They are on the lookout for the best car they can get for their money.
At the most basic level, visible rust gives the impression of a poorly maintained car. Purchasers may be prompted to look more closely at your maintenance records or try to negotiate a lower price.
If you plan on trading in at a dealership, visible rust will usually result in a lower trade in price.
How to maintain your vehicle to prevent rusting
- Wash your car on a regular basis – at least once a month if you live near the beach.
- Remember to include an underbody wash.
- Use an appropriate cleaning fluid to remove any debris from your paintwork on a frequent basis. Bird and bat droppings, road tar and chemicals are particularly damaging.
- Repair scratches and dents as soon as possible. You can touch up small areas of paint yourself, but if damage has penetrated the metal, a body shop will need to do the job.
- Keep the interior of your car dry and clean. Pay particular attention to passenger areas, such as footwells and luggage compartments.
- Park right. A garage protects your vehicle from sun and weather damage but can become damp if your vehicle is frequently parked in it while wet. This can accelerate rusting.
